Arctic Alaska: A Land of Change
Smithsonian Magazine & Alaska Pacific University, 2019-2024
I spent three summers as a field technician for Alaska Pacific University, researching treeline advance and climate change across the Brooks Range in Alaska. In addition to illustrations created for research projects, I wanted to collect my observations into one infographic to display the multitude of changes occurring in the Arctic. Compiling all the impacts of a warming climate in one scene wasn’t too far from reality; most often, these observations could be seen all at once when standing in one location. Even the most remote places on earth have evidence of anthropomorphic climate change.
Also included in the slideshow above is a selection of other graphics that display vegetation change occurring in the Arctic. These were created alongside A Changing Arctic Landscape while working as a field technician.
A simplified version of A Changing Arctic Landscape was published in Smithsonian Online Magazine with Ben Weissenbach’s article A Journey to the Northernmost Tree in Alaska (2021).
