Redwood Tree

CSUMB Science Illustration Program, 2023

Coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) are known to reach heights of about 370 feet (113 meters), making them the tallest species of trees in the world. Visiting the redwood forests of coastal California was one of my most memorable experiences in the state, and I decided to study them for my botanical final in the CSUMB Science Illustration program. Multiple old-growth redwood groves were within an hour’s drive from campus, so I spent a few weekends in Henry Cowell and at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Parks, studying redwood growth habits and collecting reference photos.
