Primary Succession and the Russell Glacier
In July of 2024, I completed the Nabesna to McCarthy Wilderness route, which traverses Wrangell St. Elias National Park and through the grand valley of the Russell Glacier. Inspired by previous research, I created this infographic to celebrate the resilient flora and fauna that can flourish in the wake of glacial retreat. I believe focusing on new growth is a way to process the challenging emotions that come with watching the disappearance of glaciers worldwide.
This panoramic view of the Russell Glacier was created by stitching together over 15 separate photographs from different points along the length of the glacier’s terminus. Therefore, the view in this infographic is “impossible” to see all at once; this is my interpretation of what it was like to walk through this landscape over an entire afternoon, capturing the whole experience within a single scene.
