Western Arctic Caribou Migration

APU & UAA Research labs, 2024

This graphic displays some main migration routes of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd along with a visual storyline of caribou numbers and trail conditions. Caribou trails are becoming overgrown with shrubs that can disrupt historic migration paths. All the while, the population of the Western Arctic Caribou Herd has been on the decline over the past few decades.

This graphic accompanied a research proposal for various study site locations in the Western Brooks Range across different watersheds. Caribou have historically been observed at Onion Portage (noted in the graphic)— a location where caribou cross the Kobuk River during their fall migration.
